The prevalence of bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) was determined in 113 Michigan dairy herds by ELISA testing for anti-BLV antibodies in milk. Additionally, an interview regarding management practices with cooperating herd managers identified farm-level variables thought to be associated with prevalence of BLV. Twenty-three risk factors (P ⩽ 0·1) were identified on one-way ANOVA or simple linear regression. Multivariate analysis identified several management practices whose predictive value for increased prevalence of BLV may relate to transmission among herd mates, e.g. reuse of hypodermic needles, lack of fly control, gouge dehorning and increased use of injections in dry cows. Additionally, exclusive breeding of heifers with artificial insemination was associated with decreased BLV prevalence, as compared with at least some use of natural service by a bull. Although intervention studies are needed before causal relationships can be concluded, and unaccounted variables related to transmission exist among dairy herds, these findings suggest management practices that may help dairy producers reduce the transmission of BLV within their herds.

Single-stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of Rubisco spacer plastid haplotypes was used to assess population differentiation in the mangrove-dwelling red alga Caloglossa leprieurii (Montagne) J. Agardh. Over 1000 samples from 16 populations in northern and eastern Australia were scored with SSCP. Seven haplotypes were discovered, three of which were only found in single populations. The haplotypes formed three phylogenetically distinct lineages. A haplotype found only in north Australia (haplotype N) has closer affinities with a haplotype previously found in Japan than with any other Australian haplotypes. One haplotype (B) was dominant in northern populations and another (C) was dominant in southern populations. Haplotype A was found in geographically intermediate populations but never in high abundance ([les ] 10%). Population analysis of haplotype frequencies revealed that many populations were significantly differentiated from each other. These data indicate that populations of C. leprieurii in Australia are genetically isolated from each other, as many individual populations, probably due to limited gene flow.

Facial expressions provide an important behavioral measure for the study of emotion, cognitive processes, and social interaction. The Facial Action Coding System (Ekman & Friesen, 1978) is an objective method for quantifying facial movement in terms of component actions. We applied computer image analysis to the problem of automatically detecting facial actions in sequences of images. Three approaches were compared: holistic spatial analysis, explicit measurement of features such as wrinkles, and estimation of motion flow fields. The three methods were combined in a hybrid system that classified six upper facial actions with 91% accuracy. The hybrid system outperformed human nonexperts on this task and performed as well as highly trained experts. An automated system would make facial expression measurement more widely accessible as a research tool in behavioral science and investigations of the neural substrates of emotion.
